Dr. Ryan Smrz grew up in Libertyville, Illinois, a suburb about 30 miles north of Chicago. He chose physical therapy because after suffering a concussion playing volleyball during his high school junior year, Dr. Ryan had to undergo extensive physical therapy. From that moment on, he knew he wanted to be a physical therapist. His therapy included many of the vestibular exercises done here at Balance Chicago.
After graduating from Truman State University, Dr. Ryan started physical therapy school at Rosalind Franklin . He completed all his rotations in outpatient settings, which ignited his interest in practicing in an outpatient clinic so he could see his patients throughout their entire length of care. During one rotation, he focused on concussion and vestibular rehabilitation which was an incredible experience that affirmed his desire to work with this patient population. It was in his rotations that he developed the belief that when caring for a patient, regardless of what they are coming in for, one has to look at the whole picture and view patient care holistically.
Growing up and going to physical therapy school in the suburbs of Chicago, Dr. Ryan knew he wanted to stay and move into the city. When the opportunity arose to join the Balance Chicago team, he thought it would be the perfect fit; especially since he was a Balance Chicago intern in the summer of 2017. He commented, “Although the clinic may have changed, the core values and beliefs stayed the same, which is amazing!”
